Guard Courtney Ramey selects Texas Longhorns

ESPN 100 guard Courtney Ramey, one of the top unsigned seniors in the country, announced his commitment to Texas on Friday afternoon.

Ramey chose the Longhorns over Louisville, the school he decommitted from after Louisville’s name surfaced in the ongoing FBI investigation of NCAA men’s basketball announced in September. Missouri, South Carolina, SMU, Oklahoma State and others also were involved in the recruiting process over the past few weeks.

“Just try to make it tough on Giannis as a scorer,” Ojeleye said. “He’s a tough player and a tough matchup for a lot of guys. Just trying to make it as tough as possible. He made a lot of tough shots. … He’s a great player, and I just tried to stay in front and make him take tough shots — try to be physical.”

Antetokounmpo acknowledged the Celtics’ defense and the problems it caused for him throughout the night, but he remained steadfast in feeling that it was on him to make the right changes heading into Game 6.

“I’m not going to take anything away from any player,” Antetokounmpo said. “I could easily say it was on me. I didn’t feel like — it was not just Semi Ojeleye, it was everybody guarding me. But he did a great job. He played hard. He competed for his team, and hopefully he can do the same thing in Game 6.”

“Before asking my name he asked me if I was in a gang, then minutes later told me he thought I was a dealer (drugs),” Richardson wrote. “What a welcome to the east coast. Finished up with asking me how much car cost me.”

A spokesperson for the Virginia State Police, Corinne N. Geller, told USA Today that a formal complaint hasn’t been filed, but the department is reviewing the matter. Geller also confirmed that Richardson was stopped “because the vehicle did not have license plates displayed as required by Virginia law.”

“Mr. Richardson’s tweet was brought to our attention Tuesday afternoon,” Geller said. “While no formal complaint has been filed, the Department is reviewing the matter, to include the trooper’s in-car camera footage of the traffic stop, to determine if the traffic stop was handled in accordance with state police policy.”

Richardson’s tweets have since been deleted, but he tweeted once more saying, “It’s true, but tweeting about it wasn’t the right way to deal.”

The 26-year-old signed a five-year deal with the Redskins reportedly worth up to $40 million at the beginning of free agency last month. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Seahawks where he was selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

About 40 miles up from where he rose and fell, Robert Griffin III will try to rise again.

Griffin, who was out of football all of last year, was signed by the Ravens on Wednesday on a one-year deal with a base salary of $1 million, according to NFL Network. He figures to step in as Joe Flacco insurance, after the franchise quarterback struggled throughout last season with a troublesome back. Josh Woodrum is the only other quarterback currently on Baltimore’s roster.

Griffin campaigned through much of last season for a job, updating his social accounts frequently with footage of him working out. In December, he said he had received offers from Arizona and Baltimore that he turned down because he couldn’t see a path to becoming the starter. Perhaps now he does.

One thing Kapler refused to do was bite on a series of questions about rookie J.P. Crawford’s early struggles at the plate. Crawford got off to a 1-for-23 start and was, by his admission, working diligently in the cage to reduce the length in his swing. But Kapler danced around several questions about Crawford’s shortcomings and focused on his young shortstop’s discerning eye and ability to work a count. His perpetually sunny-side-up approach to player assessment is a contrast from that of his predecessor, Pete Mackanin, who was generally blunt with his public comments.

The 5-foot-9 Rawls, an undrafted rookie, started just 10 games the past two years after being expected to take over as the starter after Marshawn Lynch left. With the Jets, he joins incumbent backs Bilal Powell and Elijah McGuire and recently signed Isaiah Crowell, formerly with the Browns.

Hewitt, 6-2, 234, has 104 tackles, one sack and one interception in his career with the Dolphins and was signed to be a key contributor on special teams.

The Jets also had Lions center Travis Swanson in for a free agent visit on Friday. A couple of weeks ago the Jets signed free-agent center Spencer Long to a four-year deal.

Long was selected by the Redskins in the third round of the 2014 draft. He has played guard and center, starting 18 games over the past two seasons at center. Pro Football Focus graded him as the 19th best center last year.

“The work and the preparation, it just doesn’t stop,” Kapler said. “It ends when everybody leaves the ballpark and you get home and start to make your last-minute notes. Then you crash and wake up and go, ‘Oh s—, I need to get the lineup to this and that person.’ The days just don’t end.”jets_135

New York signed Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater in free agency, but both are on short deals.

The news comes four days into the free-agency signing period at a time when the Colts were being scrutinized for not spending much of their huge stash of salary-cap space. The Colts entered the week with more than $70 million in available cap room, but so far have signed only one free agent — former Raiders defensive lineman Denico Autry.

Several other players are still in talks with the team, including Cowboys free-agent pass rusher Benson Mayowa and Redskins free-agent receiver Ryan Grant.

“We looked at free agency and we just didn’t feel like we were at a point to where we wanted to add some of the guys at the price that they were at,” Ballard said. “And we need to add some young talent to this roster.”

Graham’s no youngster (31), but he’s about 1 years younger than Nelson, a much bigger target (6-6 , 265 pounds) over the middle of the field and a major threat in the red zone (10 touchdowns last season).

For those concerned that he’s the next Martellus Bennett, Graham ran a 4.56-second 40 coming out of college and has always been more of a quick-twitch athlete than Bennett (4.68). Chances are he’s not hitting the wall Bennett hit last season.

Let’s also assume that in making this deal coach Mike McCarthy knows what Graham does and doesn’t offer, and unlike Seattle, will use him accordingly.

New York and Indianapolis will swap No. 1 picks, as the Colts will now pick sixth, and the Jets will give up the 37th and 49th picks this season. In addition, they will give the Colts their second-round pick in 2019.

The assumption now is the Jets are trading up to take a quarterback. There are four quarterbacks who could go in the top 10 and the Jets were picking at No. 6, so there was a chance they could have missed out on at least two and possibly all four.

It was a slim possiblity, but it could have happened.

Now the question is which quarterback do they take The top guys in the draft are (in no particular order) USC’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen, Wyoming’s Josh Allen and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield.

So which one do they want We’ll have to wait until April 26 to find out.

Damian Lillard feels like ‘fall guy’ over All-Star snubs

Damian Lillard feels he doesn’t always get the respect he deserves.

The two-time Western Conference All-Star has been snubbed — in his mind — from the team the last two seasons, and he doesn’t really understand why.

“He plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most, if not the most, storied franchises in that big of a market,” Lillard said. “So, so many people are going to support him throughout that, and also with his dad and all the attention that’s been surrounding him since college.

“There’s a lot of people that follow him, so, that’s not really a surprise to me. The market size and what’s going on with his family, it’s no surprise really to me.”

Lillard has battled injuries this season, forcing him to miss seven games, but he has played at an All-Star level and should get a spot at least as a reserve.

“I’m trying not to think (about facing his former team),” Miller said. “I did not think I would be facing the Rangers so soon. It’s going to be weird for my ex-teammates and my buddies. I don’t even know what to think, to be honest. It’s going to be pretty wild.”

McDonagh will miss the chance to face his former team while he continues to recover from an upper body injury that has kept him out since the first week of February. The 28-year-old former Rangers’ captain has been participating in practice with Tampa Bay while wearing a no-contact jersey. McDonagh is expected to be ready to return by early next week to make his Lightning debut, with the hope he can help improve Tampa Bay’s defensive play, which has slipped in recent weeks.

“D-zone is something we’re continuously trying to work on,” Tampa Bay center Brayden Point said. “We’re watching a lot of video, and I think it’s just finding our guys quicker, maybe a little bit more work ethic. We’re kind of getting sloppy a little bit. We’re losing our checks a little bit too much.”

The Rangers, meanwhile, are starting to see their already slim playoff hopes start to fade away coming off a 3-0 loss at home to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday. New York sits seven points out of the second wild card spot with 15 games left to play.packers_010

“We will continue to take you for granted, thus continue to instruct you on how to live without the NFL.”

The final week of the regular season is here and there are still some things to settle, most notably the final playoff spots and postseason seeding. In the AFC, the Ravens, Titans, Chargers and Bills are still alive for wild-card spots. In the NFC, the Falcons and Seahawks are vying for the final wild-card spot.

The Browns are 0-15 entering Sunday’s season finale against the Steelers and coach Hue Jackson opened his Wednesday’s press conference by asking reporters, “Who’s going to jump in the lake with me?”

The Packers would be eliminated from playoff contention on Monday night if the Falcons win at Tampa Bay. Rodgers said he hopes he’d still play against the Vikings (and Anthony Barr, who pile-drove him to break his collarbone earlier in the season), even if the postseason is not in the picture.

Their offense is a legitimate force, and their defense has enough talent — starting with Aaron Donald and Mark Barron — to continue improving under first-year coordinator Wade Phillips. They’ve scored the most points per game in the NFL as Sean McVay has unleashed Todd Gurley.

An up-and-coming team will be tested. They still have to play the Eagles, Seahawks, Saints, Vikings and Texans. If it comes down to it, the Seahawks hold the tiebreaker and get to play them at home.

McCarron will be a restricted free agent in 2018. Assuming McCarron is given the highest restricted free agent tender, which will be a minimum of $4.106 million, the Bengals would get a first-round pick if they didn’t match another team’s offer sheet for him.

The NFL is Humpty trending Dumpty, headed for a significant fall. Current team owners, having renewed Roger Goodell’s keys to their kingdoms, have renewed the message to its fans and customers:

Sunday’s Cowboys-Giants has been TV-flexed to a 1 p.m. start, the logical time to begin an outdoor game here in December, especially for ticket holders and/or PSL holders.

Except the change was predicated on diminished TV appeal — the 6-6 Cowboys are mediocre, the 2-10 Giants are 2-10 — not on righteous customer relations.

Had the teams been better, this game would have kicked off in darkness and fallen temperatures as originally scheduled — 4:30 on

You think the Bulldogs aren’t aware that quarterback Nick Fitzgerald needs help in the passing game?

A lack of playmakers at receiver was the team’s Achilles’ heel last season. So the No. 1, 2 and 3 highest-rated players in the class all came from the same position, including the No. 1-rated junior college receiver, Stephen Guidry. — Scarborough

Hey, didn’t you used to be the Chiefs? Coach Andy Reid’s loyalty to QB Alex Smith is admirable in a “What have you done for me lately?” league. But it also might be exactly the wrong thing at the moment. The Chiefs’ once-promising season is falling apart. And a drastic move, like a switch to rookie QB Patrick Mahomes, could be the only thing that can save it.

Keeping this depleted team around .500 has been an accomplishment for Coach Jay Gruden. Talk of the playoffs isn’t realistic; this isn’t the AFC wild-card race, after all. The NFC wild-card chase is far less forgiving. But remaining competitive, under the circumstances, is more than anyone could have expected.

Then welcome Anthony Schwartz, Seth Williams and Matthew Hill, who could fill that need as three of the top six highest-rated players in Auburn’s class. — Scarborough

Tight end was a need for Michigan that could be included here, but offensive tackle became a need as well. As it currently stands, Michigan has tackle Jalen Mayfield committed as well as Ryan Hayes, but Hayes is listed as a tight end and could remain at that position. The coaches are still targeting tackle Jarrett Patterson, ESPN 300 Nicholas Petit-Frere and a potential grad transfer from Calvin Anderson, who is transferring from Rice. Michigan still has some work left to do to fill this need. — VanHaaren

P!nk’s performance of the national anthem in Minneapolis will be her first time appearing on the Super Bowl stage. The American singer, songwriter and actress has released seven studio albums, one greatest hits album, sold over 50 million albums equivalents, over 75 million singles, over 2.4 million DVDs worldwide and has had 15 singles in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (four at No. 1). chargers_043

He also had a huge game in his playoff debut, catching nine passes for 142 yards against the Falcons.

That’s not to say Watkins was a chump — he had plenty of highlights himself and led the team with eight receiving touchdowns:

Jon Tayler: Thanks to an unexpected season that brought them within one game of a playoff spot, the Brewers are suddenly contenders when they were supposed to be amid a painful and protracted rebuild. But all the youth flourished earlier than expected, and Milwaukee has a chance to make real moves to make the team a real threat in the NL Central. So the Brewers should go into Winter Meetings ready to do just that.

There was a lot not to like in last week’s Panthers’ loss — especially from Newton — but the potential is definitely there.
The good news is that the previous losses don’t count any more. The bad news is that Alvin Kamara is still an unbelievably talented running back playing in an offense that understands how to maximize his skills. If Wilks knows how to contain Kamara then now is the time to prove it. If Shula actually knows how to use McCaffrey then now is the time to surprise the world.

After the game, Eagles defensive back Malcolm Jenkins said that the defense knew what the Falcons were running all along.

Sarkisian has taken criticism all year for his playcalling being bland, predictable, and downright weird at times. It’s particularly notable to see an opposing player bury the play selection after the fact.

Head coach Dan Quinn defended Sarkisian, saying that the goal was to put the game in the hands of his two best players (Ryan and Jones). From the Falcons’ website:

He’s also helped organize CommUNITY tailgates before every Dolphins home game, which bring local student-athletes, coaches, parents, community leaders, law enforcement and military personnel together to build relationships across races and economic backgrounds.

Falcons guard Ben Garland never takes a week off from community service. He tries to participate in one or two events per week and at least 63 charity events per year. Garland graduated from the Air Force Academy and fulfilled his two-year service duty, so he spends much of his community service time with veterans recovering from wounds or dealing with PTSD. blues_1075

Mavs owner Mark Cuban wouldn’t buy Panthers because NFL is ‘in decline’

bengals_014Mavericks billionaire owner Mark Cuban will not attempt to buy the Carolina Panthers.

“Why would I buy an NFL team if I think the league is in decline?” Cuban told the Dallas Morning News Monday.

Following reports that Jerry Richardson is being investigated for workplace misconduct, the Panthers owner announced he would be putting the team up for sale at the end of the season.

Cuban has attempted to buy the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and MLB’s Chicago Cubs as well as the Texas Rangers, so it’s only logical to assume Cuban would be open to buying an NFL team put up for sale.

However, Cuban has been outspoken about the problems the NFL has and said he would not want to invest in the league.

Before exiting with the injury, he became the first receiver in NFL history with five straight 100-catch seasons.

Brown addressed his injury Monday on Twitter, calling it “a minor setback for me but not this team.”

Despite running back James Conner also being sidelined and scheduled to undergo knee surgery, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger still has a plethora of offensive weapons at his disposal in running back Le’Veon Bell, wide receiver Martavis Bryant and tight end Jesse James.

Jenkins’ decision is a result of the NFL and Players Coalition joining in a partnership in which the NFL will contribute $89 million over the next seven years to projects “dealing with criminal justice reform, law enforcement/community relations and education,” according to ESPN’s Tim McManus.

Jenkins explained that he felt the partnership is going to be the proper awareness to where he wouldn’t need to demonstrate.
