Ravens waive Dustin Vaughan, sign free agent QB Thaddeus Lewis

The quarterback carousel continues to spin in Baltimore.

The Ravens on Monday announced the team has waived quarterback Dustin Vaughan and signed free-agent signal-caller Thaddeus Lewis.

Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that the Cowboys’ dynamic duo will not play, and neither will fellow Pro Bowlers Tyron Smith and Sean Lee and second-year linebacker Jaylon Smith, among others.

The NFL on Friday suspended Elliott for the first six games of the 2017 regular season, pending appeal, for a 2016 domestic violence incident, but that suspension does not apply to preseason action.

The Dallas Morning News reported that Pro Bowl offensive linemen Travis Frederick and Zack Martin also are not expected to play.

The Bengals play their third home game in the first five weeks against the Bills. Buffalo beat Cincinnati 16-12 last season. That’s a game the Bengals can’t afford to lose. Cincinnati should have a good idea of where it sits in the AFC North race when it travels to face the rival Steelers.

Cincinnati needs to go 3-1 in November in order to have any postseason hopes. That means winning on the road against Jacksonville and Tennessee and taking their best shot at Denver, then returning home and beating the in-state rival Browns. That would set Cincinnati up for an interesting November.

“The whole LeBron leaving the next year, to be honest that didn’t bother me that much. Here’s why: when you have an opportunity to really put something together and put your imprint on it — rebuilding is a beautiful thing if the (owner) is going to have the patience with you. dolphins_074

There were rumors that they might be in the market for a big name

You sure about that? Like the Blue Jays, they expected to contend this year and to be in position to sell was a big disappointment. They did find a home for Addison Reed, which is good. All three prospects heading to New York’s system ranked in the top 30 of Boston’s system, according to MLB.com. But the Mets didn’t trade versatile infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, and they didn’t move free agents-to-be Curtis Granderson or Jay Bruce, two left-handed hitting outfielders. Just felt like they could have done more, but maybe they will in August.

Good job! There were rumors that they might be in the market for a big name, but that never seemed likely. They had already added relievers Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson in a trade with the A’s, and right before the deadline on Monday they picked up Twins closer Brandon Kintzler. He’s not a headline-making name, but Kintzler has been really good the past couple seasons in Minnesota and he’ll do a good job shoring up a Nats bullpen that’s often been a disaster the past few seasons.

Baseball’s Hall of Fame, by Ken Smith: Older fans might have grown up with this in their bookshelf. Smith served at one point as director of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. His book, originally published in 1952, laid down a lot of institutional history about Cooperstown, as well as a comprehensive look at early honorees.

Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett says Colin Kaepernick’s inability to latch on with an NFL team demonstrates the divide between black players and the fans who follow the sport.
Bennett has been vocal in expressing his opinions on social issues over the past year.

Court documents allege Pete Rose committed statutory rape in ’70s

Pete Rose had sex with a female under the age of 16 when he was a major-league player in the 1970s, according to court documents filed Monday in Ohio.

ESPN first reported on the filings, which contain sworn statements by Rose and the female identified as Jane Doe.

The motions filed Monday came from former MLB special counsel John Dowd’s legal defense in Rose’s lawsuit alleging defamation by Dowd.

As our ushers tried to contain the cat, a fan grabbed it and claimed it was hers, the statement read. As she left the ballpark, our security team caught up with her and asked her some questions. She then abruptly left with the cat. We understand from media accounts that the woman intended to take it home and care for it, but lost track of it in City Garden.

The team added that a stray animal protocol is being worked out to ensure the safety of both crew and animal should this happen again in the future.

The Cardinals were trailing 5-4 in the sixth inning when the cat wandered onto the field and forced play to stop. After a member of the grounds crew secured the biting and scratching kitten, Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina slugged a grand slam to help St. Louis secure its eventual 8-5 win.

Anyone who spots Rally Cat is encouraged to contact the Cardinals or their local animal shelter.

It’s generally not public knowledge who clears waivers or who’s placed on waivers. It has been said that pretty much everyone is placed on waivers this time of year, and you often don’t hear about which team claims which players. Mystery teams galore.

NFL teams routinely open training camps with rookies reporting first. The rookies desperately need this.

Authentic Charles Tapper Jersey
Teams assess how much knowledge the rookies retained after the draft from those minicamps that followed. They assess where the rookies are in conditioning after some time off. The rookies are taught more about weight training and nutrition. More install of the playbook is given. And they are guided on the mentality of a college athlete switched to that of a pro — there is little easy about that transformation.

NFL teams have found that a player that comes from, say, Delta State University has a different exposure than a player from, say, Alabama. But the NFL goal is to mesh, merge, and mold these rookies into their fold.

Howard’s ability to work as an active receiver gives him an extra dimension and will make him a useful security blanket option for Glennon or Trubisky this fall. He caught 29 passes as a rookie and while his 58 percent catch rate was on the low side for a running back, it’s something that stands to improve with experience. This development was an added bonus for the rookie, as he’d made only 24 total receptions in his three seasons of college football.

The unique vision and innovation Howard brings to the running game also translates as a receiver. Here, he sticks with a scrambling Cutler just long enough to be the target of a last-second shovel pass. Howard’s willingness to improvise turns a broken third-and-8 play into a 38-yard gain.
Authentic Devan Dubnyk Jersey
That’s the kind of unplanned wizardry Howard brings to the table. Even when teams blast through the Chicago offensive line, he has the patience to find holes and the vision to take the path of least resistance. With opponents likely to stuff the box with defenders in an all-out effort to stop the Bears’ best player, those skills will be put to the test in 2017.

Fortunately for Chicago, its young running back has proved time and again he can be a glimmering light that shines through a bad team. All the Bears have to do now is figure out the rest of their offense.

Eli Manning looked like he was at a middle school dance in the locker room

Look — I’m not a good dancer. I’ll admit it. It’s tough to catch the rhythm, and sometimes you just look dumb.

But never again will I feel bad about my dancing after watching Eli Manning’s little half-dance thing in the locker room:

Former NFL safety John Lynch didn’t make it this year. He was a physically dominant player for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos, and his name took on recent significance as he rejoined the NFL as the general manager of the San Francisco 49ers.

The full list of finalists who did not make it this year include Tagliabue, Owens, Lynch, offensive tackle Tony Boselli, safety Brian Dawkins, offensive guard Alan Faneca, offensive tackle Joe Jacoby, center Kevin Mawae, wide receiver Isaac Bruce and cornerback Ty Law.

Last year’s class was also a big one because it included quarterback Brett Favre, and it was thought that it might be one of the best ever because it also potentially included Owens, but not only did he fail to make it then, he didn’t make it this year.

The full Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2017 has been announced, and there are a few surprises. The biggest is that former wide receiver Terrell Owens did not make it, and the class has a pair of inductees from the running back position in both LaDainian Tomlinson and Terrell Davis.

Tomlinson highlights the class, which is fully made up of Tomlinson, Davis, defensive end Jason Taylor, quarterback Kurt Warner and kicker Morten Andersen. As a contributor, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made it and senior committee nominee and former NFL safety Kenny Easley also made it.

Three best goalie choices for Golden Knights

Marc-Andre Fleury is the sexiest name of the goalies likely available to the Vegas Golden Knights at the NHL Expansion Draft next week. However, that does not guarantee he will be selected by the league’s newest club.

While the three-time Stanley Cup champion would bring name recognition, a winning pedigree and an impressive resume to Vegas, he will be 33 next season, with two more years remaining on a contract with a salary cap hit of $5.75 million annually. And most importantly, there are likely going to be better options available to the Golden Knights, who must select a minimum of three goalies during the expansion draft.

Authentic Mens James van Riemsdyk Jersey This is our opportunity, Rinne told reporters Saturday, and I think you try to do anything in your power and prepare the best you can for this one.
Authentic Mens Mario Edwards Jr Jersey
Rinne allowed three first-period goals on nine shots as the Penguins cruised to a 6-0 win to take a 3-2 series lead. Rinne’s backup, Juuse Saros, gave up three goals on 15 shots from the defending Stanley Cup champions.

If the build up to the NHL Draft is like a horse race, then Nico Hischier was chasing the leader, Nolan Patrick, the entire way before pulling even with him down the stretch and finally passing him at the finish line. Hischier went first overall to the Devils, in the process becoming the first Swiss-born player ever selected with the top pick, and the first player born outside of North America to go No. 1 in five years. He handled himself with aplomb amidst all the attention Friday night, a polite, likeable young man. Now he must be the star player the Devils so sorely need. Making the team out of training camp would be a big step in the right direction, something GM Ray Shero says is his hope.

Predators sign Viktor Arvidsson to 7-year, $29.75M contract

In a surprise move, the Nashville Predators have signed forward Viktor Arvidsson to a seven-year, $29.75 million contract, the team announced Saturday.
Authentic O. J. Simpson Jersey
The 24-year-old Arvidsson is coming off a breakout season in which he tied for the team lead with 61 points (including 31 goals) in the regular season. He added 13 points in 22 playoff games as the Predators finished runnerup to the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Final.

Evgeny is a premier center in the NHL and we are pleased that he will remain in Washington for at least the next eight years, general manager Brian MacLellan said in a statement. It is difficult to find a player of his caliber, who is in his prime and makes his teammates better. Evgeny plays with a tremendous skill, speed and tenacity needed to win in the NHL.

The 6-2, 190-pound Russian scored 19 goals with 40 assists in 82 regular-season games this past season. A first-round pick of the Caps in the 2010 NHL Draft, Kuznetsov ranks third among players in the 2010 draft class in career assists per game (0.49) and fifth in points per game (0.70).

He led the Capitals with 77 points (20g, 57a) in 82 games during the 2015-16 season, becoming the first player other than Alex Ovechkin or Nicklas Backstrom to lead the Capitals in points since 2003-04 (Robert Lang: 74).

The Capitals also traded forward Marcus Johansson to the Devils for second and third round picks in next year’s draft. Johansson had 58 points (24 goals, 34 assists) in 82 games with the Capitals last season.

Knicks’ Joakim Noah is disgusted by his awful free-throw shooting

An important thing to keep in mind before we go any further: Joakim Noah is a professional basketball player who signed a four-year, $72 million deal with the Knicks this offseason.

Limited Kids Preston Smith Jersey Noah earned a trip to the free-throw line Monday night against the Pacers, and it … didn’t go that well. He missed both attempts, one much worse than the other.

Thus far, those issues on the perimeter have played a major role in keeping Bolden off the floor, particularly on the defensive end. Regularly, Bolden has given far too much space to opposing players in perimeter coverage, such as what happened against Elon that led to his benching after just three minutes.

Bolden has played just 61 minutes, posting a 7.4 PER during that time. It’s worth pointing out here that Bolden was injured to start the year, suffering what was only referred to as a left leg injury. That could still be a factor here, and it’s always tough for freshmen to establish their footing when they only have limited play in the non-conference season. Still, like Allen above him, Bolden could strongly benefit from staying a second season. Unlike Allen though, there would be playing time risks involved there. The Blue Devils will lose Amile Jefferson and likely Jayson Tatum and Harry Giles. However, they already have a commitment from elite 2017 recruit Wendell Carter and are fully in the mix on another in Mohamed Bamba, both of whom profile as much better prospects than Bolden.
Limited Kids Kenneth Acker Jersey
Bolden could still work his way into becoming a first round pick by the end of the year. There’s a lot of time. But for a kid that some thought had top-10 potential coming into the season, his freshman year hasn’t exactly worked out as planned.

Yogi Ferrell fast-tracks NBA career by seizing opportunity with Mavs

Yogi Ferrell’s name has been famous for a long time, but he made his own presence felt while electrifying crowds at Indiana.

Now, the rookie Mavericks point guard is trying to make his way in the NBA, where 6-foot players aren’t often successful.

Ferrell, an undrafted free agent in 2016, signed a 10-day contract with the Mavericks (18-30) last week, and he has responded by helping Dallas win two games — against the Spurs and Cavaliers. Ferrell has averaged 14.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game during that time, and head coach Rick Carlisle has noticed.

The Thunder already made a serious upgrade by adding Paul George via trade to pair with 2017 NBA MVP Russell Westbrook, but snagging Anthony from the Knicks would create a formidable “Big Three” in OKC. It could also unleash the Olympics version of Anthony at the power forward spot in specific lineups.

However, as intriguing as the basketball fit may be, a trade between the Thunder and Knicks doesn’t make much sense. The Thunder don’t have much to offer in exchange for Anthony. Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis were sent to the Pacers in the George deal. Steven Adams signed an extension last October, plus he’s more valuable than Anthony at this point in his career, so he isn’t leaving. Enes Kanter is an expensive big man the Knicks likely wouldn’t want as a key piece of a trade package.

If the Thunder are serious about adding Anthony, a third team will need to help out. Of course, Anthony still holds that valuable no-trade clause and can veto any move he doesn’t like. Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reported Saturday that Anthony remains focused on heading to Houston.

A trio of Westbrook, George and Anthony would be highly entertaining. It’s just not realistic at this point.

Luke Walton was blindsided by news of Lakers upheaval

Lakers coach Luke Walton was driving to breakfast when he found out that Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak – the two men who hired him with a five-year, $25 million contract last summer – had been fired.

Walton got the unsettling news on Tuesday, Feb. 21, the same day the rest of the NBA world also heard that Lakers president Jeanie Buss had relieved executive vice president of basketball operations Jim Buss (her brother) and GM Kupchak of their duties and put Magic Johnson in charge of the team’s basketball operations. Johnson has since hired Rob Pelinka, a former player agent, as GM.

I was driving to breakfast, Walton told USA Today. And yeah, I was surprised. We had a meeting scheduled with all four of us (Walton, Jim, Kupchak and Johnson), and I was going to breakfast before the morning and then my phone started blowing up, so I came in.

The move by Jeannie Buss wasn’t a total shock to pro hoops observers. The Lakers have been struggling on the basketball court the last several years under the guidance of Jim Buss and Kupchak.

Walton, though, didn’t see it coming.

Al Horford, the Celtics’ prized offseason addition, hasn’t fared well when playing against his old team, the Hawks. Those struggles continued with a 1-for-8 shooting performance and just four points in 27 minutes. The big man is averaging 6.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists in three games against Atlanta (1-2) this season.

Geno Atkins Kids Jersey Trail Blazers guard Allen Crabbe came off the bench and poured in a career-high eight of his 10 3-point attempts for 25 points.

Elite Mens Darryl Morris Jersey Thunder (45-33) at Suns (22-57), 10 p.m. ET — Russell Westbrook came ever so close to making NBA history Wednesday, falling one rebound shy of his 42nd triple-double. He’ll get a couple more cracks at Oscar Robertson’s single-season record, and the odds are good it falls tonight. The Thunder star is averaging 41.7 points, 13.7 rebounds and 13.7 assists in three games against the Suns this season.
